DUTCH-BURT VISITING THE BURT REYNOLDS & FRIENDS MUSEUM

Finally, after almost 25 years of being a Burt Reynolds’-fan I visited The Burt Reynolds & Friends Museum in Jupiter, Florida. http://www.burtreynoldsmuseum.org/index.html Let me tell you something… It is a 5 star (5/5) recommend to visit it and every Reynolds-fan should go there. Special thanks goes out to the Director of the museum: Mike Daniel, he was willing to open the doors even though the museum is closed during the week. The museum (a former bank branch) is highly decorated with photos of Burt with Presidents, friends, family and famous people. Personal letters from Jack Lemmon and Frank Sinatra. Personal gifts from Sally Field and Goldie Hawn. There are some great props from his movies: helmet from “The Longest Yard”, Burt’s outfit from “Smokey and the Bandit II” and the original canoe from “Deliverance”. You can also take a look at Burt’s impressing TV and movie awards: People’s Choice awards, Emmy Award, Golden Globe Awards and his recently winning World Stunt Award and many more. I needed 2 hours to visit the museum and still wanted to stay longer, there is a lot to see. During the week the museum is offering educational programs include a “Master Acting Class” for experienced actors that is often personally taught by Mr. Reynolds. Director Mike Daniel was very kind and told me that he mentioned my “Unofficial Dutch-Burt Reynolds Website” with Mr. Reynolds. He also mentioned that Mr. Reynolds will give his “Master Acting Class” next week. Me and my girlfriend will stay for another 2 weeks in Florida so Mike will try to put us on the “Master Acting Class”-list to see how Mr. Reynolds teach his students. Later we talked about Sally Jo Wagner and Charles Nelson Reilly and how Mike was Set decorator for the Burt Reynolds’ movie “The Maddening”. I walked out the door with great Burt-memorabilia such as a “Longest Yard” -shirt and a die-cast model of the famous Trans-Am from “Smokey and the Bandit”.

MEETING BURT REYNOLDS

August 5, 2008… it was D-Day or better… Burt-Day.

We will attend a “Master Acting Class” teached by Hollywood legend Mr. Reynolds.

Here we were, our second visit of the museum and it looks even better. Mike Daniel is there to welcome us. I almost got a nerveous breakdown cause there he is…. I see Mr. Reynolds standing in the back, near a bar. All dressed in black, Burt look great. We sat down on our chairs and wait for the students to attend the stage. Actresses Avery Sommers (“B.L. Stryker”) and Jo Ann Pflug (“Mash”) were also in the public. As the Class began, Mr. Reynolds sat down on his chair near the stage. The whole “Master Acting Class” will be taped by two cameras (The Film Commission is currently making a documentary of Reynolds’ classes for distribution in Palm Beach County school’s drama departments). After every scene Mr. Reynolds gave advise to improve and stimulate te actors about their performances. It was incredible and unbelievable awesome to see the Hollywood legend teach the actors. Different scenes were played and now and then Mr. Reynolds got on stage. Once in a while Mr. Reynolds told stories about Charlton Heston and James Dean. It is amazing to watch. I had told Mike Daniel that we couldn’t stay the whole night cause we had to go back to Miami. During a short break I walked my way to Mike to thank him for be a part of this great night. Mike wanted me to wait and introduce me to Mr. Reynolds… My heart almost stopped. Mike took me to Mr. Reynolds and said: “Burt, this is the guy we were talking about last week”. I said that it was an honour to meet him and that Burt is my hero for almost 25 years. Mr. Reynolds shakes my hand and puts his hand on my neck, he said some nice things to me. In the meantime the actors were on stage again and the show must go on, Mr. Reynolds had to teach. Sure it was a short conversation and offcourse I wanted to ask a lot of questions. But how many fans in the world can say that they met and talked with Burt Reynolds? I said goodbye and returned to my seat. I see my girlfriend is very touched, cause she knew this was one of my greatest moments and a wish came true. Mike… Burt… Thanks.

 

 

DUTCH-BURT BEZOEKT HET BURT REYNOLDS & FRIENDS MUSEUM

Eindelijk na bijna 25 jaar fan te zijn van Burt Reynolds, heb ik zijn museum bezocht in Jupiter, Florida. http://www.burtreynoldsmuseum.org/index.html

Het is de reis dubbel en dwars waard geweest, wat fantastisch en elke Reynolds’ fan moet dit beslist een keer gezien hebben. Speciale dank gaat uit naar Directeur Mike Daniel, van het museum, die speciaal voor mij buiten openingsuren bereid was om de deuren te openen, dit na wat mail contact in Nederland en een telefoontje in Florida. Het museum (een voormalig bankgebouw) hangt vol met foto’s van Burt met presidenten, vrienden, bekenden en familie en natuurlijk zijn er allerlei props uit bekende films en series van Burt te bewonderen. Zo is oa ook de originele kano uit “Deliverance” te bewonderen, de football-helm uit “The Longest Yard” en de outfit die Burt droeg in “Smokey and the Bandit II”. Ook zijn er persoonlijke brieven te zien van oa: Jack Lemmon en Frank Sinatra. Persoonlijke kadootjes van Sally Field en Goldie Hawn. Ook zijn de imposante film en tv-prijzen van Burt te bewonderen zoals zijn People’s Choice awards, Emmy Award, Golden Globe Awards en zijn recent gewonnen World Stunt Award en nog veel meer, zondermeer geweldig. Ruim 2 uur had ik nodig om alles goed te bekijken en heb daarbij nog een zeer leuk gesprek gehad met Mike Daniel. Zo vertelde hij dat hij het met Burt over mijn Dutch-Burt website heeft gehad en dat ze samen eens een kijkje moesten nemen op de site. Verder vertelde hij dat Burt Reynolds elke dinsdag en vrijdagavond Master-Class geeft in het Museum en hij zal proberen om mij en m’n vriendin erbij te krijgen om eens een kijkje te nemen. We zullen nog 2 weken in Florida op rondreis zijn dus dat wil ik wel meemaken. Mike verteld nog een prachtig verhaal over dat hij de set decorator was tijdens het filmen van de Burt Reynolds-film “The Maddening”. Later loop ik de deur uit met allerlei gekochte Burt-memorabila.

 

MIJN ONTMOETING MET BURT REYNOLDS

Het is D-Day of beter gezegd….Burt-Day.

Op 5 augustus 2008 is het dan werkelijkheid, samen met m’n vriendin gaan we vanuit Miami voor de tweede keer naar het Museum, maar dit keer om een Master-Class bij te wonen van de Hollywood-legende zelf. Bij onze binnenkomst worden we vrijwel direct welkom geheten door Mike. Nabij het podium zijn rijen stoelen geplaatst voor de Master-Class en verderop (aan de bar) staat Burt Reynolds, de zenuwen en de adrenaline gieren door m’n lijf. Burt is geheel gekleed in het zwart en hij ziet er niet anders uit dan op tv. We nemen plaats op de stoelen en wachten tot de acteurs op het podium verschijnen. De actrices Avery Sommers (“B.L. Stryker”) en Jo Ann Pflug (“Mash”) zitten in het publiek te kijken. Er worden verschillende scènes gespeeld op het podium en alles wordt met twee camera’s opgenomen (De Film Commission is bezig met het maken van een documentaire over de Master-Class van Reynolds om ten slotte te distribueren voor de dramaopleiding van de Palm Beach County school) Burt zit vlakbij het podium en springt af en toe het podium op om de acteurs voor adviezen te voorzien en om extra stimulans te geven, maar meestal gebeurd dit nadat de scène is uitgespeeld, echt prachtig om hem zijn adviezen te zien uitdelen/regisseren. Burt vertelt ook nog prachtige verhalen over Charlton Heston en James Dean. Ik had Mike al van te voren aangegeven dat we niet tot het einde kunnen blijven omdat we nog een lange terugreis hebben, dus in een korte pauze loop ik naar Mike toe om hem te bedanken voor alles. Mike ziet dan een kans om me bij Reynolds te krijgen en vraagt of ik nog even blijf, hij neemt me mee en ik sta dan oog in oog met Mr. Reynolds. Mike introduceert me met: “Burt, this is the guy we were talking about last week”. Ik geef Burt een hand en zeg dat het een eer is om hem te ontmoeten en dat hij al 25 jaar een held van me is. Burt geeft me een hand en grijpt m’n nek en zegt dat ie zich zeer gevleid voelt en dat hij het ook leuk vind me te ontmoeten.

Op dat moment staan de acteurs klaar om de volgende scène te oefenen en moet er verder les gegeven worden… Ik pak nog even z’n arm en neem afscheid. Natuurlijk had ik nog veel meer willen zeggen en vragen, maar kom op, dit pakt niemand meer van me af. Terug bij m’n plaats aangekomen zie ik hoe m’n vriendin zwaar onder de indruk op me wacht, ze wist dat dit één van m’n grote wensen was.

Mike…. Burt…. Bedankt.
